Thamara Perera

Artist member since 2021
Toronto, Ontario

Thamara Perera is an emerging mixed-media illustrator and artist based in Toronto, Canada. She graduated from OCAD University in 2021 with a Bachelor of Design in Illustration.

Her work explores themes of human identity, duality, growth, and femininity, especially relating to her South Asian heritage, and hopes to convey the many complexities of the human experience. Skilled in traditional and digital mediums, her current practice involves a hybrid approach, fusing analogue mark-making and collage techniques with digital manipulation. She finds inspiration for her practice in nature, mythology, history, music, and film.

When she isn't sketching, Thamara enjoys listening to podcasts, hiking, jamming to Black Sabbathโ€™s greatest hits, collecting found objects, and cuddling with her cat, Nyra.

What do you listen to when you work?

I love listening to podcasts, especially about psychology, science, art, or philosophy.

What artists do you admire right now?

Lately I've been inspired by the work of Nadia Waheed, Rae Klein and the Hildebrandt Brothers.

When did you start making art, and why?

When I was a young child. I loved drawing what I saw around me and illustrating short stories I wrote. It provided me an escape from my everyday life.

Why is art important to you?

Art is an ancient instinctual practice of making sense of our world. It is integral to being human. It helps us connect with each other, and transcend the physical bounds of reality. It reminds me of what the human spirit is capable of.
